The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Liverpool close in on Ben Chilwell….
Liverpool appear to have beaten Arsenal to the £3m signing of Ben Chilwell and will snap the Leicester City defender up as part of a £7.5m double swoop that also includes Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius, according to the Mirror.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Brendan Rodgers when he took over in October and it looks as though the Reds boss is closing-in on the signing of Chilwell.
The 19-year-old is a product of the Leicester youth system and is regarded as one of the most promising young full-backs in British football having broken in to the Foxes first team with three appearances in the domestic cups this season.
However, Chilwell has struggled to force his way in to Claudio Ranieri’s plans on a regular basis and is yet to make his Premier League debut with Christian Fuchs establishing himself as the first choice left-back.
It’s understood the youngster is growing frustrated at his lack of progress at the King Power and has refused to sign a new deal, which has alerted some of the Premier League’s most powerful clubs with the Mirror claiming that Arsenal and Liverpool have been showing a keen interest.
However, it looks as though the Merseysiders are now in pole position as the newspaper says that Liverpool are expected to wrap-up a £3m deal to take Chilwell to Anfield this summer.
If the deal goes through, Chilwell is likely to be considered as the long-term successor to Alberto Moreno with the Spaniard coming under severe criticism at times this season and was once again singled out for his poor display during Wednesday’s Europa League final defeat to Sevilla.
The news will come as a blow to Arsenal as they are on the look out for a replacement for Kieran Gibbs with the 26-year-old expected to leave the Emirates in search of regular first team football.
So Chilwell looks to be off to Liverpool and he could be part of a double swoop by Klopp with the Mirror claiming that the Reds are also expected to seal a £4.5m deal for Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius.
The 22-year-old was once on the books at Manchester City but has forged an impressive career at Klopp’s former club Mainz and has already represented Germany at every youth level up to Under-21 level.
If Karius does move to Liverpool this summer, he’ll come in as competition for Simon Mignolet but it remains to be seem whether the Belgian will be able to keep the No.1 shirt after another indifferent season at Anfield.
