Arsenal are in talks to finalise a deal to sign Jamie Vardy ahead of Liverpool after triggering a £20m release clause in the Leicester City hitman’s contract, according to the Mirror.
Vardy has just come off the back of a sensational season that saw him plunder 24 goals to help fire the Foxes to a shock Premier League title win with Claudio Ranieri’s men finishing ten points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.
However, that impressive form has attracted interest from some of England’s most powerful clubs with the Mirror one of several media outlets who are reporting this evening that Arsenal have now triggered a £20m release clause in Vardy’s contract.
The newspaper says that Liverpool are also keen and have offered the striker a lucrative £140,000-a-week contract but Arsenal are in pole position to secure a deal as the release clause is only available to clubs in the Champions League.
Arsene Wenger has already signed midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer but it looks as though the Gunners boss is ready to strengthen his options up front after losing Danny Welbeck for up to nine months with a serious knee injury.
The Mirror claim that Vardy’s representatives sounded out potential new clubs last month demanding a four-year deal worth at least £120,000-a-week and Arsenal are now understood to be in talks to try and get the deal pushed through before the start of the European Championships next week.
England boss Roy Hodgson has made it clear he wants his players focussed on the Euro’s and not undergoing medicals or being involved in transfer talks during the tournament, so Arsenal will need to act fast to get things wrapped up swiftly.
Given that Vardy is 29 and is demanding a sizable contract in order to leave the newly-crowned champions, this is a somewhat surprising move by Wenger and it may be a sign that the usually frugal Frenchman has finally decided to change tact in order to try and end the clubs title drought.
