Liverpool could yet make a late play to try and hijack Arsenal’s attempts to lure Jamie Vardy away from Leicester City this summer, according to the Daily Star.

Vardy seemed to be heading to the Emirates after the Mirror claimed late last week that Arsenal had agreed to meet the 29-year-old’s £20m buyout clause and Vardy had verbally agreed a four-year contract worth in excess of £100,000-a-week.

However, the striker flew-out to France on Monday morning with the England squad ahead of Euro 2016 without completing the move after Leicester made a last ditch attempt to persuade the 24-goal hitman to remain at the King Power by offering him an improved contract.

The BBC claim that Vardy has made it clear he will wait until after the European Championships before making a decision over his future as he wants to concentrate on representing England over the coming weeks.

Arsenal’s offer remains on the table and the North Londoners are understood to be willing to wait, however, the delay could lead to the Gunners missing out on Vardy’s signature to one of their rivals.

That’s because according to the Daily Star, Liverpool have been showing an interest in Vardy for two seasons and Jurgen Klopp will consider formalising his interest in the striker during the Euro’s.

An apparent Anfield source told the newspaper:

“We know Vardy is seen as the perfect fit for Liverpool.

“That’s because of his pace, work ethic, ability to run the channels – and goal-scoring ability.”

The news comes after the Mirror reported last week that Liverpool had offered Vardy a contract worth £140,000-a-week so it appears the Merseysiders do have a strong interest in luring the England hitman to Anfield.

One potential problem over any attempt to beat Arsenal to his signature if Vardy decides to leave Leicester is that the Mirror suggest the player’s £20m buyout clause is only available to clubs who are in the Champions League.

Obviously Liverpool don’t qualify so if this rumour is true, then the Reds will need to come to their own agreement with the Premier League champions if Vardy indicates his desire to snub both Arsenal and Leicester and move to Liverpool.

Should the Mersey club be successful, you’d expect Klopp to sell one of his current crop of strikers with Christian Benteke the most likely to be sold after failing to establish himself following his move from Aston Villa last summer.

As it stands, Arsenal are clearly still in pole position to land Vardy if he opts to leave Leicester this summer but it looks as though Liverpool could yet make a late play to lure the striker to Anfield, so we’ve got an interesting few weeks ahead.
