Man Utd Steal March On Liverpool After Tabling £27.8m Attacker Bid
Manchester United have stolen a march on Liverpool after tabling a £27.8m bid for a highly rated Swiss international. Find out all the details here
The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd have tabled a bid for Breel Embolo….
Manchester United have launched a £27.8m (€35m) move for Basel attacker Breel Embolo and are willing to offer the player a £4m-per-year contract to move to Old Trafford, according to German outlet Sport Bild.
Embolo has been with Basel his entire career and came through their youth system before breaking in to the first team set-up in 2014, where he’s developed in to one of the most highly-rated youngsters in European football.
The 19-year-old scored an impressive 30 goals in his 86 first team appearances and has been tipped to have an impact over in France this summer after being named in the Switzerland squad for Euro 2016.
The youngsters potential has caught the eye of some Premier League clubs with the Mirror reporting last week that Liverpool and Manchester United were among the clubs keen on luring him to England this summer.
Jurgen Klopp has already been busy in the transfer market with goalkeeper Loris Karius becoming his third major new addition and it looks as though the Reds boss is also keen to strengthen his attacking options with Embolo on his radar.
However, it appears United have stolen a march on Liverpool as Sport Bild are reporting that Jose Mourinho is determined to sign the Swiss attacker and has sanctioned a move that will see them pay Basel £27.8m (€35m) as well as offering Embolo a deal worth around £4m per season.
The German outlet claims that newly-promoted Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzip are also in the running but aren’t willing to pay more than £15.9m (€20m) and offer Embolo £2.4m per season, so United’s offer blows them out the water.
There is no indication as to how Basel have responded to United’s reported bid but you’d imagine the Swiss outfit will be extremely tempted to cash-in as £27.8m is a huge sum for a teenager with such little experience outside of Swiss football.
United have recently splashed out big money on 22-year-old centre-back Eric Bailly so it looks as though Mourinho is on a mission to build a team for the future, which is a huge change in tact for the Portuguese coach.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will look to step-up their interest in light of United’s bid but I’d be surprised if the Merseysiders agreed to pay that kind of money for Embolo. It would be a big risk and one Liverpool can’t afford to make at this stage so I think Klopp will move on to other targets.
