Arsenal are eyeing a surprise raid on Manchester United for utility man Daley Blind after it emerged that Jose Mourinho is looking to sell the Dutchman this summer, according to the Mirror.
Mourinho was installed as the new United boss last month and while he’s prepared to give the majority of the current squad a chance to prove their worth, Blind has been identified as a player who is likely to be dispensable.
The 26-year-old was signed by Louis van Gaal as a midfielder in a £16m deal from Ajax in 2014 but spent the majority of last season playing at centre-back alongside Chris Smalling due to injuries to Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
However, Blind stands at just 5ft 9in tall and with Mourinho looking to add more physicality to the United squad this summer, the Mirror claim the Portuguese coach is willing to listen to offers for the Dutch international as he doesn’t think he’ll fit in to his new-look team next season.
And it appears there could be surprise interest from a familiar foe as the newspaper suggests that talk of Blind’s availability has put Arsenal on red alert with Arsene Wenger now eyeing a move for the player this summer.
Wenger has already signed midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Mönchengladbach but the French boss is expected to strengthen his defensive options with Calum Chambers likely to head out on loan and Blind would give the Gunners another option in the middle of defence.
The Dutchman’s versatility is also likely to appeal to Wenger as with Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini released and doubts continuing over the future of Kieran Gibbs, Blind would be able to play in midfield or at left-back if required.
However, we’ll have to wait and see whether United, and more importantly Mourinho, would be willing to do business with Arsenal should they formalise their interest with a firm offer.
United and Arsenal have rarely sold players to each other over the past 20 years but it’s the tense relationship between Wenger and Mourinho that could scupper and potential deal involving Blind this summer as the two managers have clashed several times over the years.
