Manchester United are plotting a sensational £35m bid for Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey if they fail to land Borrusia Dortmund ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, according to a report on the Sun.
Jose Mourinho was installed as Louis van Gaal’s successor last month and the Portuguese coach is gearing up for a busy summer of rebuilding at Old Trafford after watching United finish outside of the top four last season.
Midfield looks to be a particular area of concern for the Portuguese coach and Mourinho has been working hard to try and persuade Dortmund to cash-in on Armenian international playmaker Mkhitaryan in recent weeks.
The 27-year-old is keen on the move as he has just one year left on his contract and has refused to sign a new deal, and the Sun claims that United have tabled an improved offer worth £28m after seeing their opening £19.2m bid rejected.
However, Dortmund are digging their heels in as the Bundesliga giants are desperate not to lose another key player after seeing Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan leave the club in recent weeks.
Should United’s latest bid fail, the newspaper suggests that Mourinho will turn his attention to pulling off a sensational swoop on Arsenal for midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who he sees as a modern-day Frank Lampard.
The Sun claim that Mourinho knows he will face a tough time doing business with old foe Arsene Wenger but is prepared to test the Gunners’ resolve with an opening bid of £35m – although United may have to pay as much as £50m to tempt the North Londoners in to a sale.
Ramsey endured a frustrating season at the Emirates last term and has voiced his concern at being asked to play out on the wing at times. With Granit Xhaka arriving this summer, competition for one of the two central midfield spots is greater than ever at Arsenal so there is a chance the Welsh super-star could be open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford.
However, Wenger is highly unlikely to sell to his arch enemy Mourinho as the pair have a terrible relationship following a series of clashes over the past decade, so I personally don’t think there is any chance of a deal being done.
Ramsey is currently away at Euro 2016 where he’s rediscovered his best form with the 25-year-old scoring the opening goal during a 3-0 win over Russia that saw Wales progress to the last 16 as Group B winners.
