Borussia Dortmund have confirmed Man Utd have tabled an offer for Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the Reds close-in on a £33m deal for the Arsenal and Chelsea target
The opening of the summer transfer window is almost upon us so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd close in on the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan….
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Manchester United have tabled a ‘substantially improved’ offer for Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the Red Devils close-in on a £33m deal for the Arsenal and Chelsea target, according to the Mirror.
Mkhitaryan’s future has been a hot topic for debate in recent weeks after it emerged that the player wouldn’t be signing a contract extension after talks over a new deal with Dortmund collapsed.
The uncertainty led to intense speculation that the Armenian international was heading for a move with the Mirror claiming that Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all showing a keen interest in luring the attacker to the Premier League this summer.
The Bundesliga giants initially refused to do business and were prepared to hold Mkhitaryan to the final year of his deal as they were reluctant to lose another key player having already seen Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels leave the club in recent weeks.
However, the 27-year-old’s agent, Mino Raiola, put the pressure on Dortmund after going public with his clients desire to leave and he named United as Mkhitaryan’s ‘dream club’, leaving the Manchester giants as the clear favourites for his signature.
Dortmund have now confirmed that their stance has changed after the Red Devils tabled a ‘substantially improved’ offer and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed that they will make a final decision over the proposed transfer this weekend.
Watzke is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“Manchester United have substantially improved their offer,”
“The situation has changed. There are always several aspects in such a decision. I have already contacted the appropriate people and we will weigh up all the pros and cons at the weekend. Then, the board will make a decision.
“And as we start training on Monday, we will do that on the weekend, definitely.”
The Mirror claim that United’s latest bid is worth £33m while Mkhitaryan is understood to have agreed a four-year deal worth £10m-per-season, so it looks as though Jose Mourinho is closing in on his second major signing of the summer.
The Portuguese coach has already brought in defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal but he needed to add more creativity to a squad that scored just 49 league goals last season and there aren’t many better creative talents in Europe than Mkhitaryan.
The Armenian star scored 23 goals and provided an incredible 32 assists in all competitions last season so he’ll certainly provide a real threat for United in the final third next season, assuming Dortmund rubber-stamp the deal this weekend.
It will come as a blow to Arsenal and Chelsea to miss out on Mkhitaryan to United but it looks as though Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte will have to now turn their attention to other targets in their search for an attacker this summer.
