Liverpool are closing-in on the signing of Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan with a £5m deal with Augsburg expected to be wrapped-up this week, according to the Mirror.
Jurgen Klopp has made signing another experienced centre-back a priority this summer after losing both Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez to serious Achilles injuries over the past week.
Joel Matip has arrived on a free transfer but Kolo Toure left the club when his contract expired in June while Martin Skrtel joined Fenerbache last week leaving Klopp short of options at the back.
It looks like the German coach has acted swiftly as the Mirror are one of several media outlets who’re reporting today that Liverpool are set to secure a deal to sign Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg.
The newspaper says that the Reds will pay the Bundesliga outfit an initial £4m with a further £1m coming in additional add ons and the £5m deal is expected to be completed by the end of this week with Klavan signing a two-year contract with the option of a third year.
The 30-year-old has earned 108 caps for his country and has over 400 professional appearances under his belt so he’ll bring plenty of experience and maturity to the Liverpool squad once he completes his move to Anfield.
Klavan is predominantly a left-sided centre-back so will act as cover for the injured Sakho but he’s also capable of playing at left-back if required so he’ll give Klopp another option behind Alberto Moreno.
The Estonian has been in excellent form since joining Augsburg from AZ Alkmaar in 2012 and must have caught Klopp’s eye with two solid performances against Liverpool in the Europa League last season.

Once this proposed deal is finalised, Klavan will become Liverpool’s fifth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Matip, Loris Karius, Marko Grujic and Sadio Mane.
