Liverpool In Talks To Hijack Arsenal’s Proposed £26m Deal
Liverpool are in negotiations to try and hijack Arsenal’s proposed £26m deal to sign an international defender. See full details here
The summer transfer window is in full swing so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Liverpool enter the running for Shkodran Mustafi…
Liverpool are in negotiations with Valencia over Shkodran Mustafi and could hijack Arsenal’s proposed deal to sign the German international defender, according to a report in the Mirror.
The Gunners have been working hard trying to sign another centre-back after Gabriel joined Per Mertesacker on the sidelines having been ruled out for up to eight weeks with an ankle injury.
Mustafi has emerged as Arsene Wenger’s prime target in recent weeks with widespread reports suggesting that the north Londoners have been in talks with Valencia trying to thrash out a deal for the 24-year-old.
It looked as though Arsenal were finally set to wrap-up a move for Mustafi after the Daily Star reported on Thursday night that a £25.9m deal was on the verge of completion with the defender pencilled-in to undergo his medical on Monday.
However, there has yet to be any official confirmation that a transfer is in place and it looks as though Liverpool could yet hijack Arsenal’s proposed deal as the Mirror are citing reports coming out of Spain that claim the Merseysiders are trying to beat their English rivals to Mustafi’s signature.
The newspaper says that Liverpool are also in advanced negotiations with Valencia and contrary to previous reports which suggested a potential swap deal, talks about Reds attacker Luis Alberto heading in the opposite direction are understood to be separate from any deal for Mustafi.
Jurgen Klopp has seen a spate of injuries hit his defence with Mamadou Sakho, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all on the sidelines while fans are keen for the Liverpool boss to bring in competition for Alberto Moreno at left-back.
Mustafi is predominantly a central defender but he’s also capable of playing in either full-back position if required so his versatility is sure to appeal to Klopp as he’d give him plenty of options in defence.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting final few days of the transfer window and I think Mustafi would be an excellent addition for either Arsenal or Liverpool if they could manage to get a deal agreed for the German star.
I still think a transfer to Arsenal seems more likely at this stage but the longer the Gunners go without sealing the deal, it leaves the door open for Liverpool to swoop in and hijack their deal.
