Transfer News: Chelsea Plotting Raid On Manchester United
Chelsea are plotting a move for an out-of-favour Manchester United player as Antonio Conte looks to further strengthen his squad in January.
The summer transfer window is now closed for another year so it’s time to look back on those deals that didn’t go through and those that are being lined-up for the future. Today, Chelsea are linked with Matteo Darmian…
Chelsea are plotting a move for Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian after the Italian international fell out-of-favour under new boss Jose Mourinho this season, according to the Mirror.
Darmian made his name during a four-year spell with Torino and his excellent form earned him a big-money move to United last summer when former boss Louis van Gaal splashed out over £12m to bring him to England.
After an encouraging start to life at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old lost his form at the turn of the year and eventually fell down the pecking order during the second half of the campaign.
Darmian has been further marginalised this season with the Italian international yet to play a single minute of competitive football with new boss Jose Mourinho preferring Antonio Valencia at right-back.
It’s led to intense speculation that the defender will look to leave during the next transfer window and it appears Darmian could be offered the chance to stay in the Premier League and resurrect his career in London.
That’s because the Mirror are citing reports coming out of Italy that claim Chelsea are showing a keen interest in signing Darmian as Antonio Conte looks to further strengthen his defensive options at Stamford Bridge.
The former Juventus coach brought in centre-back David Luiz and left-back Marcos Alonso on deadline day but it appears Conte is looking to bring in further reinforcements in January and Darmian looks to be on his radar.
The pair know each other well as Darmian was a regular for the Italian national team under Conte and featured at Euro 2016 this summer so it appears the Blues boss is looking to be reunited in west London.
However, while I wouldn’t be surprised if Darmian was to leave United during the winter transfer window, we’ll have to wait and see whether the Red Devils would be willing to deal with a direct rival such as Chelsea.
