Arsenal have been handed an injury boost after Per Mertesacker took to Twitter to confirm he’s closing in on making his comeback from a knee problem.

Mertesacker has been on the sidelines since suffering knee ligament damage during a pre-season friendly against Lens in July and is yet to play a single minute of competitive action this season.

The German giant headed back to his homeland to begin his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery and he wasn’t expected back in action until the New Year.

However, Mertesacker revealed earlier this month that he was making good progress in his recovery and it looks like the centre-back is now set to make his return ahead of schedule.

The 32-year-old has taken to his official Twitter account to offer an update by revealing that his rehab has gone well and he’s now heading back to north London to enter the final stages of his rehabilitation.

He said on Twitter”

‘Rehab couldn’t of gone better but now all packed and ready to come back home to the team! #ReturnOfTheBFG,’

Mertesacker is now expected to return to light training before rejoining the rest of the squad where he’ll look to build on his fitness over the coming weeks before pushing for a place in Arsene Wenger’s squad.

However, he may struggle to regain his first team place as compatriot Shkodran Mustafi has formed an impressive partnership with Laurent Koscielny since arriving in the summer.
