[Video Goals] Sunderland 2-2 Liverpool: Defoe Double Dents Reds’ Title Bid

Liverpool threw away two vital points in the Premier League title race after being held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

Liverpool threw away two vital points in the Premier League title race after being held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

The Reds started well and opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Daniel Sturridge capatalised on poor defending from a corner to send a looping header over Vito Mannone for 0-1.

Sunderland then levelled things up just five minutes later when Jermaine Defoe scored from the penalty spot after Ragnar Klavan had brought down Didier Ndong in the area.

Liverpool restored their lead in the 72nd minute when Sadio Mane was on hand to turn the ball home at the far post after a corner had been flicked on at the near post.

However, Sunderland grabbed a late equaliser when they were gifted an 84th minute penalty following a needless handball by Mane. Defoe stepped up and made no mistake from the spot for the second time in the game to make it 2-2.

The result means Chelsea can open up an eight point advantage at the top if they beat Tottenham on Wednesday night.
