Liverpool chiefs have flown out to Portugal to hold talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential £25m deal to sign highly-rated midfielder William Carvalho, according to a report in the Express.
Carvalho has been with Sporting since joining the clubs youth system in 2005 and has developed in to one of the best midfielders in Portuguese football since breaking in to the first team set up in 2013.
The 24-year-old has now established himself as a vital part of Jorge Jesus’s team and is also a regular with the senior Portuguese national team with 29 caps to his name so far having represented his country at every youth level.
Carvalho has long been linked with a move to the Premier League but so far a move has failed to materialise, however, speculation is once again growing that he could be on his way to England.
The Express are citing a report coming from Portuguese outlet A Bola that claims Liverpool representatives are in Portugal holding talks with Sporting director Bruno de Carvalho over a potential deal to sign Carvalho.
It’s suggested in the newspaper that a transfer could be agreed at around £25m for the midfielder – who still has three years left on his contract – although it’s not made clear whether a deal would be for this month or in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp admitted yesterday that Jordan Henderson’s troublesome heel is still causing his discomfort while Lucas Leiva has been strongly tipped to leave Anfield having failed to nail down a regular place.
Therefore, the Reds boss could be eyeing Carvalho as the perfect man to strengthen his options in the defensive midfield department and offer some much-needed protection to a leaky defence which could end up costing Liverpool the title.
Carvalho is predominantly a deep lying midfielder but he’s also capable of playing at centre-back if needed so he’d be the ideal replacement for Leiva when he does leave while he’d also offer stiff competition for Henderson and Erme Can.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop and I think Carvalho would be an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad but I have a feeling any potential deal would be for the summer and not rushed through before the end of this month.
