Liverpool and Tottenham have been boosted in their pursuit of Max Meyer after the German international admitted he could leave Schalke this summer, according to the Mirror.

Meyer has developed in to one of the hottest properties in German football since breaking in to the Schalke first team in 2013 having progressed through their youth system.

Despite his tender age, the 21-year-old has already clocked-up 157 first team appearances and has four caps for the senior German team at international level having regularly captained the U21’s.

However, Meyer’s future at Schalke is in serious doubt as he’s approaching the final year of his current contract and so far an agreement hasn’t been reached over an extension.

The midfielder has now revealed that talks with the Bundesliga outfit have stalled and Meyer claims there is a 50-50 chance he’ll leave the Veltins Arena at the end of the season.

When asked about his contract situation, Meyer is quoted by the Mirror as saying:

“there have been no further talks”

And when asked whether he thinks he’ll sign a new deal or leave this summer, the midfielder continued:

“Why not? I can imagine both. The odds are 50-50. “

Meyer’s comments come after Markus Wienzierl publicly criticised the midfielder amid rumours the Schalke boss has prioritised tying fellow midfielder Leon Goretzka down to a new contract.

The news will no doubt have alerted Liverpool and Tottenham as the Mirror suggests that the duo are both keen on luring Meyer to the Premier League if he decides to seek a new challenge this summer.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will know the youngster well from his time in Germany and Liverpool are expected to further strengthen their squad this summer, especially if they manage to finish in the top four.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is also looking to add to his attacking options with the north Londoners on course to qualifying for the Champions League and Meyer would provide some competition for the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela.

The German youngster is predominantly an attacking central midfielder but he’s also capable of playing out wide so he’d give the likes of Klopp or Pochettino plenty of options if he was to join Liverpool or Tottenham this summer.
