Agent Confirms Man Utd & Chelsea Have Opened Talks Over Signing £85m Hitman
Antoine Griezmann’s agent has confirmed that Manchester United and Chelsea have made contact about a potential £85m deal to sign the Atletico Madrid striker
Managers are now making plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Antoine Griezmann’s agent confirms interest in the striker….
Antoine Griezmann’s agent has confirmed that Manchester United and Chelsea are among a group of five clubs who’ve made contact about a potential £85m deal to sign the Atletico Madrid striker, according to a report in the Metro.
Griezmann has developed in to one of the best strikers in the world since joining Atletico in 2014 having scored 79 and provided a further 24 assists in his 149 appearances so far.
The 26-year-old was named as the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2016 after leading France to the final while he was recently announced as the third best player on the planet behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
It’s no surprise then that Griezmann has been attracting plenty of interest with several top European clubs all linked with a move for the French international hitman ahead of the summer.
The striker split from his agent last summer and hired his father, Eric Olhats, as his new representative and he’s now confirmed that Manchester United and Chelsea are among the clubs to have made contact over signing Griezmann.
However, the duo will face stiff competition as Olhats says that Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona have also expressed their interest in triggering the players £85m (€100m) release clause.
United have been widely touted as Griezmann’s most likely destination if he leaves Atletico this summer but his agent has cast doubt over any move to Old Trafford if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Olhats is quoted as saying by the Metro.
‘Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real have inquired,’
‘There are not 50,000 clubs that can put 100 million on the table. This is the price of the (release) clause, they will not make a gift. It restricts the number of current candidates.
‘I heard that Manchester United (had an agreement) but we do not even know if they will play the Champions League!
‘Manchester United, they took information, like all the others. They came to know what is our state of mind, the mindset of the player, if there are possibilities … but it seems logical. Chelsea, Manchester City.’
So it looks as though United are going to have to finish in the top four or win the Europa League to stand any chance of signing Griezmann as Jose Mourinho looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the title next season.
A new forward is needed this summer as Wayne Rooney is expected to leave Old Trafford while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is yet to agree a new deal and Griezmann has been touted as Mourinho’s prime target.
Chelsea on the other hand can almost guarantee Champions League football next season and Antonio Conte could be eyeing Griezmann as a replacement for Diego Costa with the strikers future still in doubt following a bust-up in January.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how this develops over the coming months and with so many big clubs chasing his signature and an achievable release clause in place, it’s difficult to see Atletico being able to keep hold of Griezmann this summer.
