Manchester United are optimistic they will be able to pull-off an audacious £40m swoop on Tottenham for versatile defender Eric Dier this summer, according to the Telegraph.

Jose Mourinho resisted the temptation to dip in to the January market and will instead embark upon a busy summer of transfer activity as he looks to turn United in to genuine title challengers again.

A new defensive midfielder to replace Michael Carrick – who’s out-of-contract in June – is expected to be on the agenda and the Telegraph claim that Mourinho has identified Dier as the man he wants.

Dier has developed in to a top class player since joining Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 and he’s now considered a regular on the international stage with the senior England squad.

The 23-year-old has predominantly been used as central defender by Mauricio Pochettino this season with Dier playing on the right-side of a back three along with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

However, he’s just as comfortable playing in the holding role and the newspaper says Mourinho is willing to offer Dier the chance to play in his preferred midfield position if he moves to Old Trafford.

Victor Wanyama is Tottenham’s first choice defensive midfielder so it’s difficult to see Dier having a long-term future in that role if he chooses to remain at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a shrewd negotiator and no doubt he will be reluctant to do business with a direct rival but the Telegraph claim United are ‘cautiously optimistic’ a £40m deal can be done this summer.

The Red Devils confidence stems from the feeling that Spurs will cash-in on Dier if land summer target Michael Keane, with the report suggesting the north Londoners are in pole position to land the Burnley centre-back.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but I think this is one potential deal that we should keep a close eye on and Dier would be an excellent addition for United if they could prise him away from Spurs this summer.

Are they? Where does the optimism come from?
Seriously, Spurs haven’t sold a player to United in years and after their disgraceful behaviour over Berbatov they aren’t likely to for many more years. They really could have done with a Modric to replace Scholars – Fergie didn’t even bother trying because he knew what type of shrift he would have got from Levy – and it would have been short. They were willing to pay far more than Madrid for Bale and no-one at the Lane was interested.

Further, the whole argument rests on a total inability to appreciate Dirt’s role or status with Spurs. He began his career as a defender, he is quite happy to play there. He will also get game time in midfield – as when Wanyama is injured. He is a great asset to have and Pochettino particularly likes versatile players in a slightly smaller than traditional squad. In short, he isn’t even remotely for sale.

And why do all these articles mention how much United are prepared to pay. They used exactly the same phrase when trying to unsettle Kane on United’s behalf. They will be dealing with Daniel Levy – if they did manage to force him to sell he would be making them bleed from every orifice in return!

More like the United paymasters are getting their journo servants to shake the tree in the hope that something falls out!
