Chelsea are closing-in on a £50m deal to sign Arsenal and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, according to talkSPORT.
van Dijk is now regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League after impressing following his move to Southampton from Celtic in the summer of 2015.
The 25-year-old – who is currently on the sidelines with a serious foot injury – is being tipped to leave St Marys and join a bigger club at the end of the season.
talkSPORT say Liverpool have been showing a keen interest while Arsenal are understood to have offered van Dijk a lucrative deal that would make him one of the highest earners at the Emirates.
Jurgen Klopp knows he needs to strengthen his defence this summer if the Merseysiders are to mount a genuine title challenge next year and van Dijk has the required quality they are going to need ahead of their expected return to the Champions League.
Arsene Wenger is set to stay at Arsenal and oversee a huge overhaul with the Gunners also needing to add a dominant central defender to their ranks as a soft center has once again undermined their campaign.
However, it looks as though Liverpool and Arsenal are set to miss out on van Dijk as talkSPORT claim that Chelsea are now on the verge of agreeing a £50m deal to sign the defender.
The report says that the Dutch international has opted for a move to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are confident of getting a deal agreed after including young defender Andreas Christensen in their proposal.
It’s understood that the Saints are keen to have the highly-rated Christensen in exchange as they are resigned to losing van Dijk and the Chelsea youngster would provide them with a direct replacement.
Antonio Conte is on the verge of completing a league and cup double in his first season but he’s still looking to further strengthen his squad ahead of Chelsea’s return to the Champions League next season.
A new centre-back is needed with John Terry set to end his long association with the club and van Dijk appears to be the man Conte wants to replace the long-serving skipper.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but van Dijk would be a superb addition to the Chelsea squad if they do end up winning the race for his signature.
