Arsenal are eyeing a summer swoop for Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals after Arsene Wenger stepped-up his interest in the £15m-rated Malaga star, according to the Mirror.

The boss is out-of-contract in June but despite growing calls for him to walk away from the club, the Frenchman is being tipped to sign a new contract and oversee a huge overhaul of his squad this summer.

Central midfield has become a problem area for us this season with Santi Cazorla missing the majority of the campaign through injury while the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin and Granit Xhaka have been plagued by inconsistent form.

Wenger is expected to re-shape his midfield options at the end of the season and the Mirror are citing a report from Marca that claims Arsenal have identified Fornals as a potential target.

The 21-year-old has been on Malaga’s books since joining the clubs youth system in 2012 and he’s become a vital part of the first team since breaking in to the squad in 2015.

Fornals has two years remaining on his current contract and the report indicates that Malaga may cash-in if £15m is put on the table but it remains to be seen whether Wenger will be prepared to match that asking price.

The newspaper does say the boss has had Fornals scouted on several occasions this season and he must have been impressed by what he’s seen as the youngster has been in excellent form having scored 6 times in his 28 starts.

Fornals has already seen his potential recognised at international level having made his debut for the senior Spanish side so he looks like he has a huge future ahead of him.

The youngster is predominantly a deep lying playmaker so he could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Cazorla but he’s also capable of playing in the box-to-box role or even at No.10, so his versatility is likely to appeal to Wenger.
