Managers are now making plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of Virgil van Dijk….

Chelsea have emerged as the front runners ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal to sign Southampton’s in-demand defender Virgil van Dijk this summer, according to the Independent via the Mirror.

van Dijk has developed in to arguably the best centre-back in the Premier League since joining Southampton from Scottish champions Celtic in the summer of 2015.

The 25-year-old is being strongly tipped to leave St Mary’s at the end of the season and talkSPORT reported earlier this month that Chelsea were battling it out with Liverpool and Arsenal over a potential £50m deal.

The report indicated that Arsenal had offered van Dijk a lucrative contract to move to the Emirates as Arsene Wenger looks to add a dominant defender to his ranks following a disappointing campaign.

Jurgen Klopp is also in the market for defensive reinforcements as the Liverpool boss needs to tighten his back-line if the Merseysiders are to become genuine title challengers next season and van Dijk is understood to be his prime target.

However, it looks as though Arsenal and Liverpool could be set for disappointment as the Mirror are citing a report from the Independent that claims there is a growing belief that van Dijk favours a move to Chelsea.

Antonio Conte needs to sign a replacement for out-going skipper John Terry this summer and the Dutch international appears to be the man the Chelsea boss wants to strengthen his defence.

van Dijk would be a superb signing for the Blues as they get ready to not only defend their title but also return to the Champions League so it would be something of a coup if Chelsea do end up winning the race for his signature.
