Transfer Window: A Letter To Arsene Wenger…

arsene wenger

Dear Mr. Wenger,

Neither me nor any Gooner can thank you enough for what you have done for the club. Today, as I see the plight of clubs like Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds I realise that whatever you have done for Arsenal Football Club is immense. Continuously working with a constrained budget for the betterment of the club, is something which is not only not easy but also something not many people would do. Hence, going against you is something not many true Gooners like to do, and being part of that section, I to do not like to go against a man who has literally given his heart and soul for the club I love….

Having witnessed a few matches at the Emirates on a few occasions, I too had sunk into a low-depressed state just like millions of our clan. Scum, Toon, Albion….I am not God, that I should advise you, and I am not perfect that I should berate your each move…

So I request you, please sign 1 player this January. Who ? Preferably a defender. Our defense as is weak, having conceded already 22 goals this season and throwing away numerous leads. Last season when we conceded 40 or 42 you said it was too high for a club aspiring to win a trophy, well we are already half-way through ! and we do want a trophy this season.

Now who am I to tell you ? I don’t have a qualification like you. I don’t even have the amt of experience you have. However I, as well as majority of the Gooner population around the world do have something which even you possess – common sense. Any man, who has some amount of common sense will be able to tell you who you need in your team, just by seeing the stats. Its not calculus….if I see that a club has conceded 22 goals in 20 games, that’s like 1 goal per game, I know that the defense should be improved. You don’t need a certified degree in football management to see this.

I know from the bottom of my heart that you know this, but what I cannot understand is why don’t you do something about it ? How long will you not spend a reasonable amount in the transfer market. Yeah a reasonable amount being 10-12 million pounds. Nobody’s asking you to spend like Madrid or City, or even Barcelona for that matter. Is it to much to ask to sign 1 quality defender.

After this years World Cup, you could have spent at least 20 million on Ozil, I mean he moved to Real for £16.75! Every year Gazidis says that we have the money but Arsene does not want it. Why? If you have the money and you need a particular player, provided he is within the budget of the club, which if I may add he is, why don’t you want to spend it.

Every year, at the end of the season you say that we have improved, and we have become better. I for one, completely agree with you. Samir Nasri on his first season was nothing compared to what he is now. Abou, Song are much better players now than they were 4 years ago. Jack, young Jack is a prodigy because of Arsenal FC, but all this could have been forecasted anyway. Arsenal is a top division side, with certain standards, and obviously it shall sign those players who meet its standards. Was this not the goal of your project – ‘Project Wenger’ ? Improving and nurturing young talent, and developing or rather building a team.

You are the best Long-term manager I know. Long-term, why? Because, you run the club within its financial constraints, you don’t spend* uselessly, and you have ensured that Arsenal Football Club is stable financially for years to come. What more can a Gooner ask from you ?

Today as I write to you, we have gone 5 straight seasons without winning any silverware. 5 years without lifting one trophy. As stated before, Arsenal FC have their standards. Isn’t “Not Winning a trophy” not meeting its standards. You are a man of principle, and you firmly believe in whatever you do. But Einstein, yeah I think you know him defined “Insanity as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.” The first time you tried to do something different by fielding a comparatively stronger side in the Carling Cup we have done well. Beating the scum quite comprehensively at their lane, followed by the Toon away. We are in the semi-finals of the competition. So in all, has doing something different harmed you in anyway?

I have always written the same thing that I shall never lose faith in my club, for I respect and love it too much. You have recently stated that spending 150 million can make the entire club go bust, yeah, it can. And only an idiot would disagree with you…but no one is asking you to spend that much money, all we Gooners are asking is you to spend 8-12 million, and its not even like the amount you spend on Arshavin 2 years ago. It’s just the topping that Arsenal need to win, give us that topping Arsene, that’s all I ask.

Today is the 4th of January, and I hope we sign at least 1 defender within these 27 days. No cake (pineapple) is complete without a cherry on top, just add that cherry Sir, please add that cherry..

best comment i have ever read on the whole of goonernews. if he doesn’t buy a quality centre back then i think you have to assume there is something radically wrong with him.

Thanks DKD, completely agree with ur letter. But can some1 ensure Arsene reads this letter pls. We r tired of been 3rd best. Lets do somthin different and get a different result ARSENE!!!!!!! Fortify ur defence and stop gambling when situations r critical. The gamble with Wigan cost us 2 vital points and we hope it wunt cost us the league at the end of of this very tight and competitive season. We undertand ARSENE’S plight, but 8 changes in an inform side was just way too much for a “rotation”.

for me sqiulaci doesn’t deserve to play for arsenal so why not djouru man , he is world class defender and he deserves to play regularly …. every game he played for the team he was great , but , i agree with u we need one more defender but squilaci should leave coz he is not the kind of player arsenal need , maxes will be good signing for me .
when varmaelen return to the team he and djouru should play and i bet arsenal will have the strongest defense in the league .

well, fair letter to wenger, and I would say a nice share of your view.. at least you admit you are no wenger and unlike other sites who demand Wenger to buy, great to see you have a soft tone to your letter..

Well, I am no football manger, but I am humble enough to claim i do have experience in management. And every decision a manger makes, there bound to be impact on many other areas, and this impact is not easily seen by outsiders nor common sense.

I give an example. Should a new player arrive, it cost money, and it is always a risk whether if they are worth the cost. Also, should a new player arrive, there bound to be impact on the existing player especially those playing in the same position. These player will now start to think, ‘will I now be bench for the rest of my career here?’

What we do not know is the potential of the youth players. How good Djou and kyle bartly can be? suppose a new player arrive, this would certainly limit their chances of playing and might cause them to leave. Actually, Djou is potentially very good, and koscielny, despite his poor positioning sense, actually win alot of tackles and interception.

Not to be mistaken, I am at times in the camp who wish for a superior CB, but it is always the best for outsiders not chip in bits and pieces that spoils the overall strategy. We have to trust Wenger!

Agree with the writer . If Wenger had splashed some 30 million from the sales generated in previous years, the gunner defence won’t be that porous. He has the chance to redeem himself .If not it will be another season.
The gunners are in with a reasonable shout of the title. With some financial, not 150 miilion gbp, doping for a defender /gk,the gunners could finally land the title. To quibble over 1 to 2 million gbp over the fee is in my mind stupid and naive.
The red faced cunt had spent enormous sums on the ugly bulldog/Ferdinand and he has been laughing away to titles galore.Do fans know Arsenal are the best financially run club? They know but they expect the purse to come ouf for quality players and not some 2nd rate FM.
If MC win the titel,to hell with financial doping. Then Wenger has only himself to blame for not spending on the quality players that could have given the team a lift..Does the red face cunt and similar top managers bother about the kids they killed on the way to the title?.
    The priority is winning x100.

Good piece. Nice and respectful. However, if he fails to do what you expect and strongly feel the Club needs and still end up not winning 1trophy, how would you feel then?

For the results Wenger have been showing over the years, I believe he still reserves the right to confound each and everyone of us as fans because, as you put it and realize: he is more expert than us; he is closer to the challenge than us and he is no less interested in seeing us win things than us.

So, where then should be threshold for an Arsenal/Wenger fan: My personal answer to this is when he fails to qualify us for UEFA for 2 consecutive years and the 3rd year is looking bleak also.

I don’t think any coach can ever guarantee winning a trophy; all he can guarantee is to be in serious contention for trophies year in year out and that, Wenger’s Arsenal has ALWAYS being.

Don’t forget, not long ago, we were no better than where Tottenham is today (i.e. in good contention for a trophy). Imagine then in 3-5years of Tottenham remaining so and after winning 2trophies in a trot, for their fans to start demanding not merely to remain in contention yearly but to win trophies almost annually. It would seem like an unrealistic pressure on the coach and a blithe disregard for the fierce competition in EPL (fiercer that Spanish, German, French or Dutch league) at that time just as it seems to me unrealistic of Arsenal fans today…

    @ only1; you care about a player’s development than a trophy, right?

nope, I care about not sacrificing long term success from short term gain..

I also care about the fact that i am not in the training ground with the players and I am in no position to really knows what Arsenal needs.. Despite even at times, I am convince that Arsenal needs another CB base on my limited judgment on watching TV and some garbage news.

Lastly, I care for the simple fact that I am not a 3 times PL winner nor am I a 4 times FA cup winner.. And i don’t dare to say I am 1600 times smarter than La boss

At least this “open letter” takes a measured tone. One may not disagree with the sentiment calling for one more cb, especially since vermaelen is out long-term . Questions: who is available for sale; is their club ready to sell; how do they fit into arsenal club; are they better than what we have; etc.
P.S. The club definitely does not need a player like Ozil(who is comparable to Diaby, Wilshere, Nasri, Ramsey, Lansbury, and so on), So he performed well at the WC. Did anyone know about him before then?
