Liverpool are prepared to match any financial offers being put forward by Chelsea and Manchester City for Virgil van Dijk as the chase for the Southampton defender intensifies, according to the Liverpool Echo.
van Dijk has become one of the hottest properties in the summer transfer market after developing in to arguably the best centre-back in the Premier League since joining Southampton from Celtic in 2015.
The Dutch international has attracted interest from the upper echelons of the division with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool among the clubs to be strongly linked in recent weeks.
The Mirror reported over the weekend that City had moved in to pole position to secure van Dijk’s signature after putting forward a monster £200,000-a-week contract offer after Pep Guardiola made the 25-year-old his top defensive target.
The same newspaper reported last month that Chelsea were confident of winning the race for van Dijk as Antonio Conte looks to land the Southampton defender as his replacement for John Terry.
Chelsea need to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League and the Liverpool Echo suggest that the Blues are also ready to offer van Dijk a lucrative contract to go to Stamford Bridge.
However, the newspaper says Liverpool are prepared to match any financial package being offered by City or Chelsea and are determined to do all they can to lure van Dijk to Anfield this summer.
Jurgen Klopp wants to tighten up his defence after leaking too many goals last season and van Dijk has emerged as his prime target so it looks as though we’ve still got a three-way fight over his signature.
Southampton want to keep hold of their star man but the Liverpool Echo suggest the south coast club will sell for around £50m with City, Chelsea and Liverpool all prepared to spend big to land the centre-back.
The final decision will come down to van Dijk so we’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but there is no doubt he will be a superb addition to whichever club ends up winning the race for his signature.
