Arsenal are on the verge of announcing Sead Kolasinac as their first major signing of the summer with the defender set to pen a deal worth £7.5m-per-season, according to a report in the Express.

Kolasinac’s contract with Schalke is due to expire at the end of the month and the left-back has been in negotiations with other clubs since January after failing to agree terms with the German outfit over an extension.

The 23-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal with Sky Sports News reporting  last month that we’d beaten off stiff competition to land the talented full-back on a free transfer.

Things have gone quiet over the past fortnight but the Express are citing a report coming from Bild that claims Arsenal are now ready to announce Kolasinac as our first major signing of the summer.

The German outlet says the delay was due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Arsene Wenger but now that the boss has ended those doubts by signing a new two-year extension, the club will confirm the arrival of Kolasinac over the coming days.

The Express states that the Bosnian international has agreed a long-term deal with Arsenal worth £7.5m-per-season and will arrive to compete for the left-back berth next year.

Nacho Monreal has occupied that role in recent seasons but the 31-year-old impressed in the back three towards the end of the campaign and Kolasinac is more suited to the left wing-back position as he’s know for his attacking instincts.

He’s developed in to one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga in recent years so I think Kolasinac should prove to be an excellent addition to the squad, particularly given he’s due to arrive on a free transfer.

However, we’ll need to make room for him and it looks as though Kieran Gibbs is the man to make way as he’s struggled to hold down a regular first team place in recent seasons.

Gibbs is about to enter the final year of his contract so I fully expect him to leave and The Sun are reporting that Newcastle United are ready to pay £15m to sign the 27-year-old, which seems like good business to me.
