Chelsea are closing-in on a £35m deal to sign Tiemoue Bakayoko which could pave the way for Nemanja Matic to make his move to Manchester United this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
Blues boss Antonio Conte is desperate to further strengthen his squad as he prepares for their return to the Champions League and Bakayoko has been earmarked as a prime transfer target.
The 22-year-old caught the eye after playing a key role in helping Monaco win the Ligue 1 title last season and Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for the midfielder in recent weeks.
The Express cited a report from French outlet L’Equipe last week that claimed Chelsea were locked in negotiations with Monaco after seeing their opening £26m bid rejected.
It seems the talks have been productive as the Daily Mail are reporting today that the Blues are now close to agreeing terms over a £35m deal that will see Bakayoko head to Stamford Bridge this summer.
However, the French international’s arrival could lead to a high profile exit as the newspaper says Conte will be prepared to listen to offers for Matic, with Man Utd touted as a potential destination.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Matic is keen to link-up with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford this summer and his agent has been in constant contact with the Portuguese coach in recent weeks.
Mourinho is in the market for a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 next month – and it seems the United boss is looking to be reunited with Matic once again.
The ‘Special One’ re-signed the Serbian international during his time at Chelsea and the midfielder played a key role in helping the west Londoners win the title in 2015.
However, he’s set to fall down the pecking order once Bakayoko seals his move to Chelsea and the newspaper suggests that a move to United could now be on the cards.
It remains to be seen whether Roman Abramovich would be willing to do business with a direct rival but I think Matic would be an excellent signing for United if they could pull it off while Bakayoko will prove to be a superb replacement for Chelsea.
