Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier is desperate to leave north London and push through a potential £50m move to Manchester United this summer, according to a report in the Mirror.

Dier has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks after United boss Jose Mourinho reportedly made him one of his prime midfield targets.

The Portuguese coach has already spent heavily on centre-back Victor Lindelof and striker Romelu Lukaku but he needs to sign a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick in the middle of the park.

Dier has emerged as one of Mourinho’s key targets but Tottenham have so far insisted they aren’t willing to sell the England international and chairman Daniel Levy is known to be difficult to negotiate with.

However, the Mirror are citing a report from the Manchester Evening News that claims Dier is ‘desperate’ to join United this summer as he’s a boyhood fan of the Manchester giants and grew up idolising Roy Keane.

Dier only signed a new long-term contract at White Hart Lane last summer so Spurs are in a strong negotiating position and the newspaper suggests it would take a bid of at least £50m to tempt Tottenham in to a deal.

The north Londoners have recently agreed a similar fee for Kyle Walker to join Man City so they could also turn a huge profit on Dier if they decide to do business with United having only paid £4m for him three years ago.

The 23-year-old has been regularly used as a central defender during his time at Spurs but his preferred position is in midfield and it appears Mourinho is offering him the chance to play their on a regular basis.

Dier has struggled to hold down a starting spot in midfield at Tottenham as Victor Wanyama is Mauricio Pochettino’s first choice holding midfielder so you can see why he’s tempted by a switch to Old Trafford.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I don’t think this is a transfer story that’s going to go away any time soon and wouldn’t be surprised if a deal was eventually agreed later in the summer.

Wow Fraser Crawford what a fabulous piece of reporting based on a story in the Mirror which is based on a story in the Manchester Evening News. What would we do without sharp minded journalists like you?
Give it up. You and the other Man Utd supporters can salivate all you like but Dier, nor any other Spurs player, is going to Utd. Spurs will deal with City as they are a class act but not Utd any more.

f**k off with your dribble if you looked at diers face in training you could really see he wasn’t. Keep hoping for it to happen.

Well said guys. All the Manchester newspapers are doing is just stirring it. He is not for sale, try for some other players in Italy or Spain & leave Tottenham out of it.

Where is Eric Dier quoted once saying that he is ‘desperate’ to join the most boring football side in the premiership?

If the report had been directly sourced to Dier rather than one based upon supposition and United connected outlets stirring the pot on behalf of United, I might have been more worried. But, there again, I may also have been more worried if they had used moderate language like “interested” or “intrigued” rather than the hyperbolic “desperate”. He certainly doesn’t look desperate going into training!
