Manchester United have the chance to finally sign Nemanja Matic after Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich gave the go-ahead to a £50m deal this summer, according to The Sun.
Jose Mourinho has grown frustrated with the clubs transfer business so far this summer with Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku United’s only two new arrivals so far this window.
The Portuguese coach has been looking to strengthen his options in the middle of the park as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 soon – is desperately needed.
Matic emerged as a potential target and the Daily Mail reported last week that the Serbian international was pleading with Chelsea to let him join Mourinho at Old Trafford this summer after they initially refused to do business with their rivals.
It seems to have done the trick as The Sun are now claiming that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light to Matic joining United but only if his valuation is met.
The newspaper says that having already turned down United’s initial £35m offer, the Blues’ supremo is now demanding £50m from the Manchester giants in exchange for Matic’s signature.
It remains to be seen whether United will be willing to meet that asking price but the report indicates that Mourinho is expected to sanction an improved offer as he’s determined to get a deal agreed this month.
Matic is also believed to be desperate for a reunion with his former boss at Old Trafford and he’s still in England after being left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad so a transfer should go relatively smoothly if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs.
Mourinho was the man to re-sign Matic at Chelsea in 2014 and he played a key role in helping the club win the title that season while he also played his part in Antonio Conte’s side winning the league last year.
However, the 28-year-old’s place at Stamford Bridge is now under threat following the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco and it appears Matic could now be heading to United if they are prepared to pay what Abramovich is demanding.
