Manchester United have launched a £40m bid to sign versatile Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier this summer, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

Jose Mourinho has grown increasingly frustrated at United’s lack of action in the transfer market as he’s keen to further strengthen having only signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku so far.

The Portuguese coach is in the market for a new holding midfielder to act as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick – who turns 36 next week – and Dier has been touted as a prime target in recent weeks.

Widespread reports have suggested United are desperate to sign the England international but Tottenham have insisted they aren’t interested in selling Dier at any price this summer.

It looks like the Manchester giants have tested that resolve as Sky Sports News and talkSPORT presenter Jim White has claimed sources close to Dier say United have made a £40m offer for his services.

White tweeted late last night:

Dier is a boyhood United fan and the Manchester Evening News [via the Mirror] reported recently that he is desperate to move to Old Trafford so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The 23-year-old is under a long-term contract so I don’t think £40m will be enough to persuade Tottenham to sell considering they got over £50m for Kyle Walker but the north Londoners might be tempted to cash-in if United offer a similar fee.

Dier has predominantly played as a centre-half since joining Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 but he’s struggled to hold down a regular place in his preferred central midfield role due to the presence of Victor Wanyama.

It looks like Mourinho is ready to offer Dier the chance to play regularly in his favoured position on top of a healthy pay rise so you can appreciate why the player is reportedly keen on a move to Manchester.

He is an arse. He just said again in talk sport that Dier wants to join United. That Spurs over achieved.

This is lacy reporting Spurs won’t sell and Dier’s favourite position was centre back when he came to Spurs

Correct. He even said he wanted to concentrate on being a centre back.

Is this bilge STILL being reported? The Manchester Evening News says Dier is still keen on Man U: wow, that’s a scoop! Dier is a boyhood Man U supporter – boyhood, maybe, but now? Don’t think so, if his attitude to Ander Herreira is anything to go by. And then a quote from the font of all wisdom that is Jim White? Really?
This s spectacularly lazy journalism without any substance to it.

Show me where Dier has ever stated he wants to go? And for the record he was an Everton fan.
This is United working the media to try and undermine .
    What complete rubbish.
