Arsenal are in pole position ahead of rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign £36m-rated Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri this summer, according to L’Equipe via the Daily Star.
Seri has developed in to one of the best central midfielders in French football since joining Nice from Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira in the summer of 2015.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a superb campaign last season that saw him score seven goals and provide a further nine assists to help Nice secure an impressive third-placed finish in Ligue 1.
Seri’s performances have caught the eye of several clubs throughout Europe with the Daily Star citing a report from L’Equipe that claims Tottenham, Swansea and AS Roma are all showing a keen interest.
Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make a single signing in the transfer market this summer but the Spurs boss knows he needs to strengthen ahead of their return to the Champions League and Seri would be an excellent addition.
However, the French publication suggests that Arsenal are the current favourites to sign the Ivory Coast international with the Gunners having a strong interest in luring him to the Emirates.
Nice are determined to keep hold of Seri until after their Champions League qualifier against Ajax but the newspaper says Arsenal will step-up their pursuit of the midfielder once that tie is out the way.
Seri has two years left on his contract and is showing no sign of signing an extension at the Allianz Riviera so it seems a move is on the cards this summer with Arsenal in the driving seat to secure his signature.
Arsene Wenger needs to bring in another midfielder as Jack Wilshere is expected to leave this summer, Santi Cazorla can’t be relied upon due to on-going issues with an Achilles injury while Mohamed Elneny is also being tipped for a move.
Seri would be a superb signing for the Gunners and they could easily afford his £36m buyout clause [via the Daily Star] so this is one potential transfer that’s worth keeping a close eye on over the coming weeks.
