Tottenham and Chelsea are preparing moves for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley but Manchester United are also monitoring his situation
Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, the latest on Ross Barkley….
Tottenham and Chelsea are preparing moves for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley during the closing stages of the transfer window but Manchester United are also monitoring his situation, according to the Telegraph.
Barkley’s future has been the subject of much speculation this summer as he’s expected to leave Goodison Park after refusing to sign a new contract extension.
The 23-year-old has been with the Toffees since coming through the clubs youth academy but he’s in the final year of his contract and Ronald Koeman says they are ready to cash-in this summer.
Being one of the brightest young talents in British football, it’s no surprise that Barkley has attracted plenty of interest and the Telegraph claim Tottenham, Chelsea and United are all vying for his signature.
Several of the best bookmakers have touted Spurs as the front-runners all summer with the north Londoners currently priced as the 3/1 favourites to sign Barkley before the window shuts.
Tottenham are looking to snap-up the midfielder in a bargain deal as the Telegraph’s report says chairman Daniel Levy believes he can land the Barkley for just £25m after refusing to pay Everton’s initial £50m asking price.
Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make a single signing but the Tottenham boss has promised movement during the closing stages of the window and Barkley would be an excellent addition to their squad.
However, the Telegraph says Spurs are now facing strong competition from Chelsea as the Premier League champions are also understood to be lining-up a bid for the England international.
Antonio Conte is desperate to further strengthen his squad and it looks like the Blues boss has also set his sights on Barkley as the Blues believe he could prove to be one of the bargain buys of the summer.
Chelsea have the financial firepower to offer the player in excess of £100,000-a-week but they may struggle to offer him the amount of first team football he would get if he joined Tottenham.
However, the London duo could yet face further competition as the newspaper claims United are also monitoring Barkley’s situation but they are yet to show the kind of interest being shown by Chelsea or Spurs.
Jose Mourinho is also hoping to make further additions before the end of the month and Barkley would provide another option for the United boss in midfield if he decided to lure him to Old Trafford.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but it looks as though there is going to be a fierce battle over Barkley’s signature during the closing stages of the window and I think he’ll be a bargain if any club can snap him up for anywhere near £25m.
