Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea join Tottenham in the race to sign Joao Cancelo…
Chelsea have stolen a march on Tottenham after making an enquiry over the availability of £25m-rated Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo, according to the Daily Mail.
The 23-year-old is a product of the Benfica youth system and has developed in to one of the most highly-rated young right-backs in Europe since joining Valencia in 2015.
Cancelo made 38 appearances last season and has also broken in to the senior Portugal squad after previously representing his country at every youth level from U16 to U21 so he certainly has a huge future ahead of him.
The defender has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus this summer while the Daily Mail reported recently that Tottenham are also lining-up a move for the player after Mauricio Pochettino identified him as a target.
The Spurs boss is yet to sign a single player this summer but he desperately needs to bring-in a new right-back as Kyle Walker has joined Man City while Kieran Trippier has been ruled out with an ankle injury.
Pochettino therefore has no established right-back to choose from for Tottenham’s Premier League opener at Newcastle United on Sunday so you’d expect the north Londoners to step-up their interest in Cancelo if he’s the man they want.
However, it looks like Spurs will face fresh competition as the Daily Mail are now reporting that Chelsea have stolen a march on their rivals after making contact with Valencia to express their interest in signing the Portuguese international.
Antonio Conte is looking to sign another right-back to compete with Victor Moses in the wing-back position this season and it seems he’s now made an enquiry about Cancelo making a potential move to west London.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but the Daily Mail suggest the likes of Chelsea or Spurs will need to pay £25m to secure a deal and I think Cancelo would be an excellent signing for either club.
