Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Marco Asensio wants to hold talks with Real Madrid about his future….
Marco Asensio is demanding showdown talks with Real Madrid about his future amid interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, according to a report in the Mirror.
Asensio joined Madrid from Mallorca for just £3m in 2014 and he’s developed in to one of the most highly-rated young attackers in Spanish football over the past three years.
Despite starting just 11 La Liga games last season, the 21-year-old still managed to chip in with 10 goals and 4 assists while he’s already been capped by the Spanish national team at senior level.
His impressive form has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs who are reportedly keen to offer the youngster more regular action ahead of the 2018 World Cup next summer.
It seems Asensio has caught the eye of clubs here in England as the Mirror are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Arsenal are ready to trigger his £72m release clause while Liverpool are also understood to be showing a keen interest.
Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to further strengthen his squad before the end of the month and the Gunners boss may view Asensio as an alternative target to Thomas Lemar after struggling to agree a deal with Monaco for the Frenchman.
Jurgen Klopp is also believed to be scouring the market for a top class attacker after Philippe Coutinho handed in a transfer request to try and force through a move to Barcelona so Asensio could be seen as the ideal replacement.
The Mirror claim that the Spanish international has now requested emergency talks with Madrid officials to discuss his future in light of interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.
However, the newspaper says his priority is to remain at the Bernabeu and he’s hoping to use the interest being shown in him to secure an improved contract with the European champions.
So it looks like Arsenal and Liverpool may miss out on signing Asensio as the player is just using them to get a better deal at Madrid, which would be a shame as he’d be a sensational signing for either club.
