Liverpool put one foot in the group stages of the Champions League thanks to a vital 2-1 away win over Hoffenheim in Germany this evening.

The hosts wasted the perfect opportunity to open the scoring in the 11th minute having missed a penalty after Dejan Lovren had fouled Serge Gnabry in the area.

Liverpool took full advantage of their fortune as Trent Alexander-Arnold curled home a superb free-kick from 25 yards in the 36th minute to give Jurgen Klopp’s side the lead.

James Milner then came off the bench to give the Merseysiders a priceless second away goal when his shot took a huge deflection to find the top corner in the 73rd minute.

Hoffenheim ensured it was a nervy final few minutes after Mark Uth broke the offside trap before firing a fine low shot past Simon Mignolet to make it 2-1 with just three minutes left.

Liverpool held on to secure a vital 2-1 away win meaning they are the heavy favourites to book their place in the group stages of the Champions League ahead of next weeks second leg at Anfield.
