Tottenham To Battle Chelsea Over Signing Of £30m Star In January

Tottenham are ready to renew their interest in Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and go head-to-head with Chelsea over his signature this winter

The transfer window is now closed but clubs are already thinking ahead to January and next summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, more on Ross Barkley…

Tottenham are ready to renew their interest in Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and go head-to-head with Chelsea over his signature this winter, according to the Evening Standard.

Barkley’s future was the subject of intense speculation throughout the summer window as he’s in the final year of his contract and he has so far refused to sign an extension.

Chelsea and Tottenham were among the clubs to be strongly linked with the England international in recent months but the prospects of a move were dampened after Barkley was ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury.

That still didn’t deter Chelsea as the Blues made a late play to try and sign the 23-year-old on deadline day with the Evening Standard claiming Barkley was lined-up for a £30m move to Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder opted against joining Chelsea as he wanted to bide his time and think over his options but the newspaper says he hasn’t discouraged Antonio Conte from returning with another offer in January.

However, it looks like Chelsea will face some stiff competition as the Evening Standard claim that Tottenham will renew their interest in signing Barkley during the winter window.

Mauricio Pochettino had earmarked the Everton star as a prime transfer target this summer but the Spurs boss opted against making a formal move while the player was sidelined with a serious injury.

But it looks like the north Londoners will now go back in for Barkley and battle-it-out with Chelsea over his signature in January and it will be interesting to see where he eventually ends up – although the report indicates that Barkley favoured a move to Spurs this summer so perhaps that was behind his decision to snub Chelsea.

The bad news for Everton is that they will no doubt have to accept far less than £30m this winter as Barkley will be available on a free transfer next June, so Spurs or Chelsea should get themselves a bargain.
