Man City Team News: Pep Confirms Injury Boost But Key Man To Miss Liverpool Clash

Pep Guardiola has delivered a mixed team news and injury update ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool this weekend.

Manchester City will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the new season when they entertain Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

Ahead of the game, Pep Guardiola has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s given reporters a team news and injury update.

The Spaniard confirmed a major injury blow with the news that skipper Vincent Kompany has been ruled out of the game tomorrow after suffering a fresh calf injury.

Kompany picked up the latest injury while away on international duty with Belgian this week and although Guardiola describes the issue as only minor, it will be enough to see him miss the visit of Liverpool.

However, the City boss had more positive news to bring us regarding Ilkay Gundogan as the German international is now considered fit and available for selection this weekend.

The midfielder has been on the sidelines for almost ten months after suffering a serious knee injury last season but he’s back in training and in contention to face Liverpool.

Guardiola told mcfc.com:

“He [Kompany] played with Belgium against Gibraltar. They won 9-0. He had a little problem in his calf. I think he will not be able for tomorrow.”

“It will be short [his absence]. The next time he will be able to play. I’m sad. I would like him to be fit.

“He made a huge effort, our physios worked a lot to take care of him, so the last seven, eight, nine games of the season he played without problem for 90 mins.

“This season we take care of him, he played three games 90 minutes. Now was the period of three games a week and unfortunately we lost him. We will try to recover as soon as possible.

“He [Gundogan] has trained with us in the last two weeks, three weeks,” he said. “He is part of the group.”
