Man Utd Team News: Mourinho Confirms Boost But 5 Key Men To Miss Liverpool Clash
Jose Mourinho has offered a team news update ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool and he’ll be without five key players.
Manchester United will look to continue their excellent start to the season when they take on Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Jose Mourinho has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s given a team news and injury update.
The Red Devils boss confirmed that Michael Carrick will once again miss out with a calf injury that’s already kept him out of United’s last two matches against CSKA Moscow and Crystal Palace.
Marouane Fellaini will also miss the trip to Liverpool after suffering a knee ligament injury while playing for Belgium during the recent international break.
With Paul Pogba also still recovering from a hamstring injury that’s kept him out for the past month, it means United are low on options in the middle of the park this weekend.
However, there was some positive news to come from Mourinho’s press conference as the United boss confirmed that Romelu Lukaku has been declared fit and available for selection.
There were fears the striker may be a doubt for the trip to Anfield after picking-up a minor ankle problem with Belgium but he came off the bench to score during their win over Cyprus on Tuesday and is now in-line to start against Liverpool.
Mourinho told ManUtd.com:
“Michael Carrick? I know he cannot play, I know that. Lukaku looks fine and that’s it.”
With Pogba, Fellaini and Carrick all sidelined, it means Mourinho has little option than to hand Ander Herrera a rare start alongside Nemanja Matic in midfield this weekend.
United will also continue to be without the services of Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the pair continue their rehabilitation from serious knee ligament injuries so it means the Reds will be without five first team players against Liverpool.
