Arsenal and Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out over the signing of Marcos Reus if he decides to leave Borussia Dortmund next summer, according to the Mirror.
Reus has developed a reputation as one of the most talented attackers in European football since joining Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.
The 28-year-old has scored 89 goals and provided a further 61 assists in his 189 appearances but his time at the Westfalonstadion has been plagued by a number of serious injuries.
Reus is currently on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury that he suffered in the German Cup final last season and he’s not expected to return until the early stages of 2018.
The German international’s contract with Dortmund is due to expire in 2019 and the Mirror cite a report from Sky Sports Germany that claims Arsenal and Man Utd are keeping a close eye on his situation.
Reus recently admitted that he’s considering his long-term future at Dortmund and feels he’s approaching the stage of his career where it might be time to try a new challenge.
He’s quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“There are four or five international clubs who interest me. On May 31 next year, I will turn 30. That would be my last big contract and a final opportunity to try something different.
“I have to be honest and fair and say I don’t know where I’ll end up. At the moment, I’m very happy in Dortmund and not thinking about what happens after 2019. But, of course, the time will come and then I will sit down and calmly make a decision.”
Arsenal have long been linked with Reus and the Mirror suggest that Arsene Wenger has identified him as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez – who’s expected to leave the Emirates next summer.
However, it seems the Gunners will face stiff competition as the newspaper says United are also keen on Reus with Jose Mourinho already planning his transfer activity ahead of next summer.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Reus decides to leave Dortmund but I think he’d be an excellent signing for Arsenal or United if they were able to lure him to the Premier League – as long as he stayed fit!
