Defensive Targets: Buy One Of This Lot Arsene And Win Some Trophies

News that Arsene Wenger might be force into making a foray into the transfer market this season after the injury suffered by Sebastian Squillaci is certainly music to my ears. Our defence has been weak all season long even after adding Koscielny and Squillaci in the summer. We have lost our best defender in Vermaelen for much of the season and he is not looking close to making a comeback. With Squillaci out basically we are back to where we were last season with only 2 fit centerbacks in the team. Koscielny and Djourou have done tremendously, especially the Swiss but it is inevitable that Arsene will now sign a centerback in this January transfer window. The questions is who will he sign? Will he plum for a quality centerback to shore up the defence for this season and moving forward OR will he just get a cut-rate defender as cover for the regular first team players.

If it is the latter, there are already reports linking us back to Sol Campbell. I don’t think this is anything near plausible since the Englishman spurned our contract offer to sign for Newcastle. There are also reports linking us to David Wheater over at Middleborough. Taking this option and going for Campbell or Wheater would certainly be cheaper but I fear it will affect our chances this season. It is very similar to the situation last season when Arsene had the chance to buy a center back in January but he didn’t and we ended up looking woefully short when both Gallas and Vermaelen were out. Arsene is a quick learned man so I don’t think he will make the same mistake again.

So it  is likely that he will choose the first option and signal his intent to win all competitions with a major signing. Over the last day or so, all the names we have been linked to in the past have surfaced. Cahill, Jagielka, Mertersacker, Saphic, Tasci and Samba look to be the likely targets, if you read and believe the British press.

Of all the players, I am rooting that we sign Gary Cahill. This guy ticks all the boxes as far as what Arsene is looking for. He’s young, tough, fast and have a calm head for one so young. The only problem is he will not come cheap and may not want to leave the North-West for London. The other player I like is Per Mertersacker. He was one of the best defenders at the World Cup and have continued his good form for Werder Bremen. Getting him over the channel and into England may be a problem though, as German players are always reluctant to leave the Bundesliga.

Lastly and possibly the cheapest alternative is Christopher Samba from Blackburn. Here is a behemoth of a defender, with all the Premiership experience you want. He will bring steel and height to a fragile defence. Moreover, he is looking to leave Blackburn at the double after Big Sam was sacked. Plus point, he speaks French. Minus point – he adores the Big Walrus.

Personally, any of the three is good enough for me. The most important thing is Arsene must signing someone within these 3 weeks.

It’s taking it too far to say the defense has been weak. Only three teams have conceded fewer goals and of these only one has scored a fraction more.

However, it does not change the fact that we have been defensively shaky at times and conceded those critical and often stupid goals costing points.

This is, however, not a simple center-half discussion. It is a team and tactics discussion. Look at Arshavin in particular and the cover from midfield in general when fullbacks attack almost naively.

In recent games the best string has actually improved on this. And wow – suddenly you feel we’re in control….

By all means buy an additional center back but get the team organised defensively and press the opponents when we loose posession …

    Cheers

AW is at it again…it shouldn’t be a second thought issue, Vermaelen will need time to come back to full fitness so it’s so obvious we need a sternly tested centre half. Samba is premiership tested, rugged, high physical presence, francophone(necessary language for communicating so the back four are all french) and will likely come @ cut price. But @ d big stage, it remains to see how he will fare. Same for Cahill, stern, quick, strong and though he’s english, it won’t work against him but the issue will be his price cos english players are usually over rated. With these two in mind, AW should splash the cash seeing that we are in a good position to lift some silverware this season.

that defense with squill and kos is WEAK!!!…djourou has bolsterd it and has done brilliantly….we may have not conceded that many but if you analyse many of the ones we have let in they have been very poor,,,and we could be sitting at the top of the league now by a clear margin if we had a decent defense.I agree with the above in that we need to defend collectively as well…arshavin needs to track back and song has disciplined himself to stay back and cover.
GARY CAHILL FOR ME, WITH MERTESACKER AS 2ND CHOICE…heres hoping and praying!!!.

cahill is over rated. just because he is english does not make him solid. He has never been in anybody elses team of the season for the past 2-3 years.Samba on the other hand will help with his leadership ability or guile. Why should we pay 20m for a person because of his passport.

We definately need a CB quick, but arsene don’t leave it till the last minute. The player needs to gel
quickly, we have barca to beat.

all those dissing kos and squillacci should be realistic because, in my 25 years of supporting arsenal i dont remember us having the best defence in the league bar more than 2 times.Kos has been good.If he was called thompson or kelly and born in calisle we will be saying lets go for him and he will be worth at least 18m.hes had his up and downs but there is no stronger partnership in the league better than him and djourou imho.

Whoever Wenger brings in I hope it’s sooner rather than later and not a botched job i.e. Squillaci and Koscielny. We need players who can actually defend, a taller player not someone who’s 5′ nothing and can’t see the ball coming if someone’s standing in front of him, and they need to be able to defend set pieces, and if they cost money so be it, we have the funds available.
