Tottenham have been handed a huge injury boost with Jan Vertonghen returning to fitness ahead of Saturday’s trip to Arsenal, according to Football London.

Vertonghen was forced to miss Belgium’s 3-3 friendly draw with Mexico on Friday night after picking up a heel injury during training on international duty last week.

This sparked fears that the centre-back could be ruled out of Tottenham’s huge North London Derby with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this weekend.

However, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was confident the injury wasn’t serious and Football London claim Vertonghen was able to resume full training with the rest of the squad on Monday.

The news will come as a welcome relief to Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as Vertonghen is a key member of his starting eleven and it would have been a big blow had he missed the trip to Arsenal.

While it will be a boost that the 30-year-old has made a swift recovery, a minor concern for Tottenham may be that Football London say Vertonghen is expected to start for Belgium against Japan this evening.

No doubt Pochettino will be watching the game closely as he’ll be praying the defender doesn’t aggravate his heel injury as that would almost certainly rule him out of the North London Derby this weekend.

With Toby Alderweireld a major doubt with a hamstring injury, the last thing Pochettino needs is to lose another key central defender so the Spurs boss will be hoping his player comes through tonight’s game unscathed.
