Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing an audacious swoop on Chelsea to sign unhappy defender David Luiz following his bust-up with Antonio Conte, according to the Daily Star.

Luiz’s future at Stamford Bridge is in serious doubt after he was axed for Chelsea’s Premier League victory over United before the international break.

The Brazilian defender didn’t even make the squad with Conte opting to start Andreas Christensen at the back with youngster Ethan Ampadu picked ahead of Luiz on the bench.

The Daily Star claim the 30-year-old fell out with Conte after openly questioning his tactics following Chelsea’s 3-0 Champions League defeat to Roma just five days before the United game.

The newspaper says the defender is ‘extremely unhappy’ with how the situation has been handled and is disappointed the club’s hierarchy haven’t supported him during his bust up with the manager.

We’ve seen in the recent past how brutal Conte can be when he falls out with a player following his treatment of Diego Costa so we could be about to see something similar unfold with Luiz.

If the South American does leave, the Daily Star claim Mourinho is ready to try and lure him to Manchester United as he looks to be reunited with the defender at Old Trafford.

Mourinho and Luiz worked together at Chelsea before the centre-back joined PSG in 2014 and the United boss is understood to be on the look-out for another top class defender.

No doubt Chelsea would prefer to sell Luiz abroad but they’ve shown with Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic that they will sell to United so we can’t rule out the possibility of Luiz heading to Old Trafford.

The report suggests Chelsea would want at least £34m for his signature and United could easily afford to pay that kind of money so this is one transfer story we should keep a close eye on over the coming weeks.
