Wenger Fuels Cahill & Samba Rumours With “Adapted To English Football” Claim

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has narrowed down his search for a defender by admitting ideally the player would already have premiership experience under his belt. Following an injury to Sebastien Squillaci and yet another set back for Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger has admitted he is now forced into looking for defensive reinforcements, and now it seems that man may already be playing in the Premier League.

Interestingly, Arsenal have been heavily linked with moves for Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Blackburn’s Christopher Samba and Wengers recent comments will only fuel the flames. Wenger told Arsenal.com last night:

“Ideally it would be better if they were adapted to English football,” he said. “If you need players now in January then you cannot wait three months before they can play. If the opportunity turns up we will fetch it but, if not, I believe we can cope.

“We always have people in mind and we check them out. We look everywhere. It’s difficult to find [them] at this period of the season but overall I feel at the moment we have so many games that it’s very important just to focus on the next one.

My hope is that Arsene has the balls to make his move sooner rather than later. We all know the Frenchman likes to bide his time and play his very own game of transfer ‘poker’, waiting till the last day of the transfer window to make his move in an attempt at getting his man at a knockdown price. Unfortunately his last couple of attempts have failed, Alonso and Hangeland come to mind, so hopefully this time round he will get in there early and seal the deal.

A worry for Gooners is Wenger rounded off the interview with his customary ‘internal solutions’ rubbish, claiming that if he doesn’t find the right deal this January, we already have sufficient back up in the un-tested Miquel and Alex Song. Correct me if I’m wrong Arsene, but if these players can do the job of playing at centre back at the top level, why are you looking for a new centre back in the first place?

“We have solutions internally with Ignasi Miquel, with Alex Song who can play centre back and with Squillaci, who should come back very quickly.

“If we find somebody at the right level we will do it, if not we will continue like this.”

I’m not suggesting it’s panic stations and Wenger should go out and get raped for £20million for Cahill or anything. But it’s clear that with only two recognised centre backs in Djourou and Koscielny available and a jam-packed January schedule ahead, we need somebody in quickly who can slot straight into the team. Not an easy task i know, but isn’t that what scouts are for? They should have a list of targets noted down already, so go get a deal done now Arsene!

My gut feeling is Cahill is Wenger’s top target but we wont pay whats required to get him, so we’ll either buy nobody or settle for second best and sign someone like Emir Spahic.

Who do you think Arsene has in mind? Who do you hope he will go for? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section….

Got to be Chris Samba, Big “solid” centre back with a lot of experience. and he set us back less than 15 million with a sensible wage (about 60-70 k)

Dan.Aust, Agger? As in Liverpool’s Daniel Agger? You’ve got to be kidding me. I won’t even rate Skrtel let alone Agger.

Samba should be the no. 1 choice! He’s a monster.

Well I hope that AW goes for both Cahill and Samba!
Imagine how well our defense would be like. Vermaelen could play along with them, if not he could play as a DM with song rotating him.
But im sure this would not happen. AW will go for either Cahill or Samba

It has to be Chris Samba. He is ideal in every way.
    Just do it Arsene.

Tammy is right. It has to be Chris Samba to shore up Arsenal’s defence. He would work wonders with Song and give confidence to Sagna. We might even make a clean sweep of all the silverware.
    Hail Hail Arsene

Well we all know Wenger will not spend on quality and it will cost us in the end
Experienced in English football means Sol back on a free
If this happens what kind of message does this send to Cesc,Nasri and the rest of EUROPE
Buy Cahill now and do some sort of deal with Vela on loan we have a good relationship with Bolton who under Coyle are now becoming a model club

I agree with Keith, if Wenger does not get Sol, he will get no one. Liverpool do not sell to Arsenal, Samba will cost a bomb because Blackburn are not ready to sell anyway and £18 – £20m Cahill is impossible. We will end up like last season.

If Wenger was keen on buying quality we would not have Kols and Squills in the first place – and we will have a tall decent goalie as well.

Wenger is only the manager of the decade because he has made Arsenal millions. It is not enough to say “see what I have done with so little resources”. You must say – “see what I have won with some resources”.

    Just my opinion:

Option #1: Cahill – the only interesting thing about this prospect is that Owen Coyle is very interested in Carlos Vela. I’d say the only way we could get Cahill would be for Vela to be used as a make-weight in order to bring the price down to £15 million or so if he were to go on loan. If they wanted to do a straight swap, the fee could come down to as low as £8-£10 million. I’d say Arsene would value Vela around the £10-£12 million range (Arsene most likely won’t want to sell Vela within the Premier League if it amounts to that; he’ll want to ship Vela out of the League to save us from possibly being bitten by the deal later on).

Option #2: Samba – his asking price may be a little high for his lack of ‘technical skill’ required to play in our side in Arsene’s eyes. Once again, Vela could be used as a make-weight in a loan situation (I doubt Vela would cooperate in being switched to Blackburn on a permanent basis however).

Option #3: Upson – asking price should be the typical ‘flea market’ Wenger price range so that is what makes this option the most likely. What makes it equally as unlikely, he was shipped out of Highbury eight years ago and with Sol being the rare exception, Arsene doesn’t like to resign players.

While others may be wishful options, it seems that these are the noteable available players during this window. Availability does make this window more difficult to conduct business in compared to the summer, but it wouldn’t be as difficult if Wenger were as potent in his signing at the back as he is with his attacking players (hint hint: potential Eden Hazard move in the summer).

    One added comment about Cahill…..

Coyle and Wenger have a very good business relationship. Wenger could use this relationship to benefit both parties by trying to loan out his players to Bolton on a regular basis in order to get Cahill. Perhaps both Vela and Emmanuel-Thomas now and others to follow in the future?

i think AW should just bring out 18 million pounds for cahill he would be perfect for the gunners and would play well with Vermealen
and in the summer he should sell squillaci and buy Jan Vertonghen
