Basel vs Man Utd: Team News | Expected Line-Ups | Match Prediction | Betting
Manchester United take on Basel in the Champions League this evening. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Manchester United will be looking to maintain their 100% record in the Champions League when they take on Basel tonight.
United warmed up for the game with a 4-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United on Saturday that saw them reclaim second-place in the Premier League table but the focus will be on European matters this evening.
The Red Devils only need to avoid defeat to guarantee their place in the last-16 of the competition as they sit six points clear of Group A with just two games left to play.
However, Jose Mourinho will no doubt want to continue their dominance having won all four of their matches so far and United should be confident of collecting all three points after beating Basel 3-0 in the reverse fixture.
The Swiss champions currently sit second in the group on six points and know a win for them combined with a CSKA Moscow defeat to Benfica would see them progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Team news
United will be without Phil Jones as he’s been ruled out for at least another two games after sustaining a thigh injury while on international duty with England earlier this month.
Eric Bailly is also still missing so Victor Lindelof is expected to continue alongside Chris Smalling in defence while Michael Carrick hasn’t made the trip to Switzerland.
Paul Pogba made a successful return from injury at the weekend but after three months out Mourinho may decide not to risk him from the start again this evening.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic also came off the bench to make his long-awaited return but the striker isn’t in a position to start just yet so he’ll remain among the substitutes.
Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia are expected to be rested with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Matteo Darmian and Dailey Blind pushing for recalls.
Basel will be without Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Alexander Fransson and Germano Vailati through injury while Taulant Xhaka is suspended.
Expected Line-Ups
Predicted Score
Basel 1-2 Man Utd: This is actually a tricky place to come as no English team has ever kept a clean sheet away to Basel in 13 visits so I don’t think this will be an easy game for United. However, Mourinho’s men have lost just one of their last nine Champions League games and have looked strong in Europe this season so I think they’ll edge this one.
