Manchester United have been dealt a major blow as Nemanja Matic is expected to miss this weekend’s trip to Arsenal after picking up an injury against Watford last night.

Matic once again started alongside Paul Pogba in the middle of the park at Vicarage Road and put in another commanding display as United raced in to a 3-0 lead at half-time.

However, the Serbian international asked to be substituted early in the second half and Mourinho was forced to replace the midfielder with Ander Herrera in the 54th minute.

Without Matic marshalling the midfield, Mourinho felt United lacked ‘stability’ as Watford pulled it back to 3-2 before Jesse Lingard sealed the win with a superb solo goal during the closing minutes.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Mourinho admitted that Matic was forced off with a muscular injury and while he doesn’t know the severity of the problem just yet, the United boss feels it must be serious for the player to withdraw himself from the match.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Mirror:

“Matic is injured, I don’t know how badly,”

“For Matic to tell me he wants to be replaced, he does not do that if it is nothing important. It is muscular.”

Matic will be further assessed at Carrington today but United will now be sweating over the results as the 29-year-old has been a key player since joining the club from Chelsea in the summer.

However, with just three days until United’s trip to the Emirates on Saturday night, it unlikely Matic will recover in time to face Arsenal which will be a huge blow to Mourinho’s men.

We’ll have to wait and see how serious the injury is but United will be desperate to get Matic available for the visit of Manchester City to Old Trafford on the 10th of December.

United cut City’s lead at the top of the table to five points with their 4-2 win at Watford but Pep Guardiola’s side can restore their eight point advantage with a win over Southampton this evening.
