Romelu Lukaku was on target once again as Manchester United closed the gap on Manchester City with a hard fought 2-1 victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns this afternoon.

The Baggies started well and were holding their own against United but the visitors broke their resolve as Romelu Lukaku glanced home a lovely header from a Marcus Rashford cross in the 27th minute.

The Red Devils doubled their advantage in fortuitous circumstances as Ben Foster looked to have Jesse Lingard’s shot from the edge of the area covered but it deflected off Hegazy and in to the net for 2-0 in the 35th minute.

United controlled things after the break but West Brom grew in to things and pulled one back as substitute Gareth Barry scrambled home to make it 1-2 from close range following a 77th minute corner.

West Brom had a couple of late chances to snatch a draw but United held on to secure a vital 2-1 win that sees them close the gap on leaders City to 11 points.
