[Video Goals] West Brom 1-1 Arsenal: Baggies Gifted Controversial Late Penalty

By on December 31, 2017

West Bromwich Albion were gifted a controversial late penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Hawthorns this evening.

The first half was a sloppy affair with neither side able to create many clear-cut chances with an Alex Iwobi effort from the edge of the box the best we could come up with.

Things didn’t get much better after the break as Arsenal struggled to get in to gear and West Brom grew in confidence that they could get something on the break.

It looked like Arsenal had found a winner when Alexis Sanchez saw his free-kick deflect off James McClean and past Ben Foster for 1-0 in the 83rd minute.

However, there was late controversy as referee Mike Dean gave West Brom a contentious penalty after Kieran Gibbs kicked the ball against Calum Chambers’ hand from close range. Jay Rodriguez made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-1 in the 89th minute.

Arsenal couldn’t find a late winner so we had to settle for a point which leaves us sitting fifth in the table and three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool after 21 games played.

Here are the highlights and goals:
