Arsenal’s Defender Search: Now Is The Time To Act Arsene!

News that Thomas Vermaelen will be undergoing surgery this wednesday and should be out for at least another 6 weeks does not bode well for the Gunners. If Saturday’s performance is any indication, the defense still needs a lot of improvement before it can face the likes of Barcelona or Manchester United in our quest for the League and European titles.

Ironically, the clean sheet was our third in a row in the premiership but the performance of Djourou and Eboue leaves a lot to be desired. We can be comforted that Sagna will be back for the next match but with Vermaelen and Squillaci now out, there are no senior players to rotate in central defense.

VOdds

Djourou has improved quite a bit over the last couple of matches but he still needs to have that consistency in his game. Saturday was not one of his better ones and if the opposition was anything more than a woeful West Ham, we would have been in for a rude shock.

Arsene has talked about his intention to bring out the cheque book but we have yet to see any indication of it. Many names have been linked to us, the latest being Philippe Mexes but there is still no concrete news as yet. I fear that our title aspirations and cup dreams may be in tatters if the Professor is up to his old negotiation tricks and waits until the window is almost over.

The month of Jauary is extremely hectic with games coming thick and fast so any injuries to Djourou or Koscielny will be a major blow. Of course we can move Song back to the defense but it will definitely weaken the established midfield partnership. I wouldn’t want to change the winning formula.

So Arsene, please get out your cheque book and sign us a central defender please.

You would think this was important wouldn’t you? However, yet again there seems to be no sense of urgency and you can bet one of the two left standing will be crocked before anything happens. Then “unfortunate injuries” will be blamed when a complete lack of responsibility will be the real reason. Do we never learn?

The situation of the team now regarding central defense requires attention. Though Wenger has promised to buy someone, I hope that something does happen. I am not quite sure it would be good to introduce Miguel into the premiership at this stage as it will be a huge gamble.

We have 14 days left in the “window”. AW knows full well his needs in the defence. We must have patience and leave it to him to sign the best available player at an acceptable cost. There is nothing else we can do.
Matters, of necessity, will be kept secret to counteract the inevitable inflationary value of a player when it is apparent that ARSENAL are interested.
    Keep calm and wait.

Well said nicky, it is nice to see a rational contribution rather than the usual stereotypical nonsense from the likes of king gooner and his ilk.

Who wants to bet that Miquel/Song will be chucked in there when either Djourou cant play another game or Kos gets a red card. I do thing Wenger needs to buy soon but even I can’t think of an adeqaute signing.

Well DW if even you can’t think of ‘an adequate signing’ what chance does Arsene Wenger and all his scouts stand!!!

The problem surely is that any really good player would come at an inflated price and would want some assurance of being first choice. It seems that Arsene has already decided that Djorou, Koscieny and Vermaillen are going to be around as his first choices for some time – one has only got to see how many times he is playing Koscieny to understand that he is definitely a project which he seems to think is a long term Arsenal player. I therefore believe that he will go for another “squad” player as back up only and we can but hope that he turns out to be a Vidic!

With our goalkeeping situation becoming a thing of the past due to the flamboyant young pole that is Wojciech (literally translated as the smiling warrior) Szczesney Wenger can now concentrate on doing what he does best, unearthing hidden talent. Vermaelen is a different class and with his “10 day” injury now becoming more of a permanent reservation arsenal do need cover at the back, whether this comes in the form of a squad player (Matthew Upson) or a world class centre back (Mertesacker) rest assured that Wenger is doing the best for the club in the long run and will refuse to panic buy for the sake of doing so.

On a slightly unrelated note, it was nice to see a full strength arsenal midfield and attack for a change at Upton Park and Arshavin dropped to the bench until he gets his confidence back.

we have only 1 top class central defender so that should be the reason for buying one now. Its as simple as that.
The prioblem is 3 -fold and all relate to the fragile ego of AW.
    1. he has already bought kos and squillachi….one of which is average and the other useless and therefore to buy a top quality central defender would be an admission of poor judgement or a gross mistake.
    2. He sees the high price tags and believes that he is being “conned” and his ego wouldnt allow that.
3 he is probably aware at least that a large contingent of arsenal fans and some ex-players are saying what we need and therefore he wont be seen as giving way to pressure as he is the man in charge.
All these reasons are down to his perception ….if he bought cahill for instance no-one will think any more or less of him.
I just dont get it..its becoming a pattern…cygan, stephanophs silvestre squillachi……what is it with him and centre backs????

Excellent point people. We have all seen this movie before haven’t we? Let’s play the blame game and say “bad luck” instead of actually getting depth.
