Star Urged To Make Transfer Decision As Arsenal & Liverpool Battle Over Midfielder
Schalke have urged Leon Goretzka to make a final decision over his future as the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool battle to sign the talented midfielder
The January transfer window is now open so clubs are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season and put deals in place for the summer. Today, the latest on Leon Goretzka….
Schalke have urged Leon Goretzka to make a final decision over his future as the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool battle to sign the talented midfielder, according to a report in the Mirror.
Goretzka has developed in to one of the best all-round midfielders in German football over the past few years but his future at Schalke is in serious doubt as his contract is due to expire in June.
The German international has become one of the most sought-after players in the Europe after refusing to sign a new contract extension and he’s free to hold talks with foreign clubs about a free transfer move in the summer.
Understandably, there is plenty of interest being shown in his services with the Mirror claiming that Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs hoping to lure Goretzka to the Premier League while there is plenty of interest from Germany and Spain.
Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies has now revealed that the Bundesliga club have done all they can to try and persuade the midfielder to remain at the Veltins-Arena but has urged Goretzka to make a final decision over his future.
The 22-year-old has previously indicated he would announce his next move by the end of January and it seems Schalke are keen to find out his decision as soon as possible.
Tonnies is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“We’ve done everything to ensure he stays. In January, he wants to say what he’s doing. Schalke have accepted the financial conditions of Leon and his management.
“He was also important for the sporting development of the team last summer and, after the first half of the season, we’re in second place and in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Leon can and must decide now.”
Arsene Wenger is on the market for reinforcements as Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere are among the Arsenal players who are out-of-contract in June and Goretzka is seemingly on the Gunners bosses radar.
However, Liverpool are also showing a keen interest in luring the German star to Anfield as Jurgen Klopp lines-up potential replacements for Emre Can – who’s contract is also up this summer and is being tipped to join Juventus.
We’ll have to wait and see what Goretzka decides to do over the coming weeks but I think he’d be a superb signing for Arsenal or Liverpool if either club could win the race for his signature.
