Manchester United are trying to hijack Manchester City’s move for Alexis Sanchez after submitting a formal £25m offer for the Arsenal attacker, according to the Guardian.

Sanchez came close to joining City in the summer but a proposed move collapsed on deadline day after Arsenal failed to sign Monaco’s Thomas Lemar as a replacement.

The Citizens have renewed their interest in recent weeks and Sanchez was fully expected to finally complete a switch to the Etihad this month in order to work under Pep Guardiola again.

However, City have yet to agree a fee with Arsenal and it looks like they now face some stiff competition with United looking to hijack their proposed deal for the Chilean international.

The Guardian are one of several outlets who’re reporting that United have tabled a formal £25m offer for Sanchez’s signature as Jose Mourinho tries to lure the attacker to Old Trafford.

The newspaper says United have trumped City’s £20m offer and are willing to pay Sanchez more than the £250,000-a-week he’s been offered by the run-away Premier League leaders.

It remains to be seen how Arsenal will respond to the offer but the Guardian claim that United have also offered the Gunners Henrikh Mkhitaryan in exchange for Sanchez’s signature.

The Armenian international has fallen out of favour under Mourinho and Wenger is understood to be a huge fan of the 28-year-old’s having been linked when he left Borussia Dortmund.

Mkhitaryan would also provide Arsenal with a direct replacement for Sanchez so Wenger could be tempted by the opportunity to sign the talented playmaker.

However, it remains to be seen whether Sanchez is ready to snub City in favour of United and I’m sure Guardiola won’t give up without a fight so it’s going to be fascinating to see how this saga plays out.
