Arsenal Given Go-Ahead To Complete £25m Deal As Wenger Closes-In On Third Signing

Arsenal have been given the green light to sign Jonny Evans in a £25m deal this month after West Brom lined-up Ali Gabr as his replacement

The January transfer window is in full swing so clubs are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season and put deals in place for the summer. Today, Arsenal are linked with Jonny Evans….

Arsenal have been given the green light to sign Jonny Evans in a £25m deal this month after West Brom lined-up Ali Gabr as his replacement, according to the Mirror.

Arsene Wenger has been concentrating his efforts on reinforcing his attacking options with Henrikh Mkhitaryan arriving from Manchester United while Pierrer-Emerick Aubameyang is also being strongly linked.

However, it seems the boss is also looking to strengthen his options at the back as Per Mertesacker is due to retire in the summer while Laurent Koscielny has struggled with an Achilles injury over the last 18 months.

It means we need to add an experienced centre-back to the squad and reports in recent days have suggested Arsenal have now renewed their interest in signing Evans after failing to land him in the summer.

The 30-year-old has been one of the most consistent central defenders in the Premier League since joining West Brom from Man Utd in 2015 and he’s also attracted interest from Man City.

However, Pep Guardiola has reportedly turned his attention to Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte so Arsenal are now in pole position to sign the Northern Ireland international this month.

The Mirror claim we’ve now been given the go-ahead to push through a £25m deal as West Brom have decided to cash-in on Evans rather than risk seeing a £3m release clause activated in the summer if the Baggies are relegated.

The newspaper says Alan Pardew has already lined-up Egyptian defender Ali Gabr as a replacement while he also plans to use the funds raised from Evans’ sale to launch swoops for Troy Deeney and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

With a week left until the winter window slams shut, Arsenal look like they are going to be extremely busy as the club look to get deals for Evans and Aubameyang over the line.

If Evans is the first through the door then he’d become our third signing of the January window following the arrival of Mkhitaryan and Greek youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos.
