Transfer News: Man Utd Face Battle With Chelsea To Sign South American Star

By on January 27, 2018

The January transfer window is in full swing so clubs are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season and put deals in place for the summer. Today, Arturo Vidal is linked with Man Utd and Chelsea…

Manchester United face a battle with Premier League rivals Chelsea to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal at the end of the season, according to reports in Germany via Football London.

Vidal has been one of the best all-round midfielders in European football over the past few years and he’s continued to impress since joining Bayern from Juventus in 2015.

The Chilean international has provided 21 goals and 18 assists in his 114 appearances to help the Bundesliga giants win consecutive league and cup doubles while Bayern are well on course to lifting the Bundesliga title once again this campaign.

However, Vidal’s future at the Allianz Arena is in serious doubt after Bayern agreed to sign Leon Goretzka at the end of the season while they also bolstered their midfield options by signing Corentin Tolisso and Sebastian Rudy last summer.

Vidal will have just one year remaining on his contract with Bayern in June so the German outfit are ready to cash-in this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2019.

It seems Vidal will be offered a new start here in England as Football London are citing reports coming from Bild that claim Man Utd and Chelsea have already expressed their interest in signing him.

United are in the market for midfield reinforcements as Michael Carrick is due to retire in June while Marouane Fellaini’s contract is up in the summer and it seems Jose Mourinho wants Vidal to join international team mate Alexis Sanchez at Old Trafford.

However, Chelsea are also showing a keen interest in signing the South American midfielder and Antonio Conte knows Vidal well having won three consecutive Serie A titles together at Juve.

Conte admitted last month that he’s a huge fan of Vidal’s and would love to work with him again. The Blues boss is quoted as saying by Football London:

“[Vidal] is a fantastic player. I have a great respect for Arturo, and we spent many years in Juventus together. If we go to war, I’d always want him with me.”

“He has extraordinary physical and technical attributes, if I get to coach him a little more it’d be fantastic. I want him on all my teams.”

We’ll have to wait and see what happens over the coming months but I think Vidal would be a superb signing for United or Chelsea if either team is able to win the race for his signature this summer.
