Manchester United are hoping to fend off interest from Manchester City and Arsenal as Jose Mourinho looks to wrap-up a late swoop for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, according to the Express.
Fred has proven to be a superb signing for Shakhtar since joining the club from Internacional in 2013 while the midfielder has also broken in to the Brazilian national team with 6 caps to his name so far.
The 24-year-old has been virtually ever-present for the Ukrainian giants this season having featured 24 times across all competitions and he’s provided 2 goals and 4 assists from midfield so far.
Fred’s impressive display’s have attracted interest from the Premier League with the Express claiming that United, Arsenal and Man City have all been showing a keen interest in luring him to England.
Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen his midfield options after selling Francis Coquelin while the long-term future’s of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere remain in doubt and Fred appears to be on the Arsenal bosses radar.
City have been strongly linked with the South American star in recent days as Pep Guardiola looks to add a long-term replacement for Yaya Toure to his star-studded squad.
However, the Express are citing a report from the Daily Star that claims United are looking to beat their rivals to Fred’s signature as Mourinho tries to pull-off a late swoop before the window closes on Wednesday night.
The United boss needs to strengthen in the middle of the park as Michael Carrick is due to retire in June while Marouane Fellaini is out-of-contract in the summer and is no closer to signing a new deal.
The report claims United are now hoping to beat their rivals to Fred’s signature over the coming days with Shakhtar ready to do business if £50m is put on the table this month.

We’ll have to wait and see how things progress over the coming days but Fred would be an excellent addition to any squad if the likes of United, City or Arsenal were able to get a deal agreed before Wednesday’s deadline.
