Manchester United could yet pull-off a late swoop to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred ahead of rivals Manchester City, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Fred has been a superb signing for Shakhtar since joining the club from Internacional in 2013 while the midfielder has also broken in to the Brazilian national team having been capped by his country 6 times so far.

The 24-year-old has been virtually ever-present for the Ukrainian giants this season having featured 24 times across all competitions and he’s provided 2 goals and 4 assists from midfield.

Fred’s impressive display’s have attracted interest from the Premier League with the Manchester Evening News claiming that United and City have been showing a keen interest in luring him to England.

Pep Guardiola is on the look-out for a long-term replacement for 32-year-old Fernandinho and Fred had been lined-up as a prime target with City seeing two bids rejected last week.

However, the MEN claim Guardiola has postponed his pursuit of Fred until the summer and turned his attention to signing a new attacker n deadline day following an injury to Leroy Sane at the weekend.

The newspaper says this decision has opened the door for United to launch a late swoop for the midfielder as Shakhtar are reportedly encouraging bids for Fred during the closing stages of the window.

The Express reported over the weekend that Shakhtar are willing to cash-in if £50m is put on the table and United have the resources to meet the Ukrainian giants asking price if they decide to formalise their interest.

Jose Mourinho is in the market for midfield reinforcements as Michael Carrick is due to retire in June while Marouane Fellaini is out-of-contract in the summer and is no closer to signing a new deal and Fred would be an excellent addition if United could secure his signature.
